The usual deadline for W-2s and 1099-NECs is January 31. In 2027, January 31 falls on a Sunday, so the federal due date moves to Monday, February 1, 2027. That date applies to W-2s furnished to employees and filed with the SSA, and to 1099-NECs furnished to subcontractors and filed with the IRS.
Two changes worth knowing:
For payments made in 2026, the reporting threshold for 1099-NEC rises to $2,000. It was $600 for payments before 2026.
If you file 10 or more information returns in total (W-2s and 1099s counted together), you must file electronically.
Massachusetts also wants copies. W-2s go to Mass DOR through MassTaxConnect (paper filers attach Form M-3), and 1099-NECs are due to DOR by January 31 as well.
If you start payroll with us on your first pay date of 2027, there’s no mid-year history to bring over and next January’s W-2s are produced automatically. Our Year-End 1099 & W-2 Package covers this year’s forms.
We serve Worcester and the surrounding Central Massachusetts area, and clients anywhere in the U.S. remotely. Restaurants, shops, offices, home services and other small employers with a handful of people up to larger teams. Two groups we work with a lot:
Crews, overtime, multiple job sites, and subs who need 1099s. Public projects in Massachusetts require prevailing wages, and under M.G.L. c.149 §27B every contractor and subcontractor on those projects must submit certified payroll records to the awarding authority every week, with a signed Statement of Compliance. Certified payroll reports for you to sign and submit are available as an add-on, priced per report. We also collect W-9s when you add a new sub, so year-end 1099s go smoothly.
One PFML detail that catches contractors: eligible 1099-MISC contractors may count toward your covered PFML workforce when they make up more than 50% of it and meet the coverage criteria. We help you count correctly.
Maintenance staff, a leasing agent, a part-time bookkeeper on site: we run payroll for small property-management companies and code the costs to the right property in your books. We also track the vendors you pay, like plumbers, electricians and cleaners, so 1099s are ready in January.

For nonemployee compensation paid in 2026, you generally file a 1099-NEC when you pay someone $2,000 or more during the year. Before 2026 the threshold was $600.
